This summer, AstroFridays are sponsored by Linda Eaves. Through embracing Astrology and her Leo North Node, Linda is “playing” her way to happiness and fulfillment. To keep up with Linda find her on Facebook.

Actually, Mercury doesn’t move into Leo until Monday, June 25 at 10:24pm EDT but I write AstroFriday posts, not AstroMonday posts, so you get a few days notice!
Also, on Monday, Saturn turns direct. But, that’s not a hugely significant event. Saturn is a slow moving planet; therefore, we don’t feel its retrograde motion that strongly. Additionally, Saturn is retrograde several months at a time, each and every year. Basically, we’re used to it.
Venus finally goes direct on Wednesday, June 27 at 11:07am EDT. Venus only goes retrograde every 1.5 years, and we DO feel its impact in retrograde. Strongly. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to celebrate its forward motion! Venus has been in Gemini and will continue to be there until August. You can read all about it at “Love is All Around.”
Mercury, as most of you probably know, is the planet of communication. It’s been super speedy of late, sprinting through an entire astrological sign in just about two weeks. After it enters Leo, though, it will stay there until August 31. What could possibly keep it in a sign for so long?
Yes, this is a pop quiz!!!
If you guessed, “Mercury will be retrograde,” give yourself a silver star! Mercury goes retrograde, in Leo, on July 14 and stays that way until August 7. You are probably uncomfortably familiar with Mercury Retrograde, but if you’d like a reminder, check out “What’s Really Going on When a Planet Goes Retrograde.”
Mercury in Leo
Leo is the sign of fun and charisma and romance but not commitment. Leo also rules sports, gambling and creativity. Leo is the performer who loves to take Center Stage. Leo is “playing around.” Mercury is communication. Mercury, as a Roman god, was also known for playing practical jokes. He’s the Trickster. It doesn’t take an astrologer to imagine what these two energies are going to be like when they are joined together!
As a symbol of this combined energy, I thought of a larger-than-life, accomplished actor, who plays around. Someone like George Clooney. (Actually, I checked his chart, and if the time of birth is correct, he does have MARS in Leo in the fifth house, which is ruled by Leo. Mars rules sex. So, there you go.)
Not to be sexist, I posted on facebook and Twitter, asking for a female equivalent of George Clooney. It was a popular question. Some of the responses: Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Madonna, Glenn Close, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Bacall. But, as one friend wrote, “Why can’t I think of a single woman who is equal to G.C.? I mean most of these women got married often or were quiet about their relationships. Name a woman who dates a guy for 2 years, makes it clear she will never marry, then puts them up in an apartment for the rest of their lives as she moves on to the next guy. Tell me society wouldn’t look down on her.”
What to expect this summer
This will be a fun, creative time. If you work in any kind of creative communication, you’ll likely be “flowing” like never before.
With the planet of communication in the sign of the Lothario, you could very well be swept off your feet, in any number of areas. If it sounds too good to be true… enjoy it, but please, please, no commitments until September! (This is exacerbated by the planet of LOVE, Venus, being in the mutable sign of Gemini until August 7. It’s almost impossible for Gemini to choose just one thing!)
If you are a smooth talker, have mercy on the rest of us and use your power responsibly!
Leo can also be self-absorbed. During this time, people (and that includes you and me!) might like to “hear themselves talk.” In other words, you might have to remind yourself to LISTEN to other people. If you feel like people aren’t listening to you, pour it into whatever creative outlet you have, and know it will get better when Leo moves on in September. Yes, this might be the “Summer of the Soliloquy”!
Also, we’ll have 3.5 weeks of Mercury Retrograde in the middle of all of this, and that’s already a time of miscommunication. I repeat: No commitments or signing of contracts, during this time, if at all possible!
As for practical jokes, I’m not sure how that will play out. But, pairing The Trickster with the most playful sign in the Zodiac, well, let me know if you pull off anything spectacular. (Or, are on the receiving end.)
Want to know how this will affect you personally?
Much will depend on what house Leo occupies in your personal chart, and if you have any planets there. Feel free to leave your house and Leonine planets in the comment field below, and I’ll do my best to give it to you straight. (Remember, Mercury won’t be a “smooth talker” until Monday!)

Jackie, with Uranus in Leo, you will have an unusual leadership style and are likely highly creative. You welcome change IF it’s YOUR idea. When Mercury is transiting next to Uranus, you will be thinking at record speed and “seem to be getting insights out of the air.” Write them down!
You can also be scattered and nervous during this transit, so again, write down any thoughts/insights you have but don’t worry about applying them just yet.
Jennifer, you said, “April, when Mercury is conjunct Mars: Debate! You will want to argue, probably, during this. Try to not take yourself too seriously. Pick your battles, so to speak. You will have lots of mental energy too.
Is Leo mostly in your 6th or 7th house? (above or below that line?)”
–Leo is directly below (almost touching) the line but definitely within the 6th house. For the last few days I have definitely noticed myself debating more… especially the wisdom of people’s choices… leading to frustration on my part. I’m guessing that release and acceptance are the keys here… I’m hoping the “mental energy” you mentioned could mean creative energy and not just debating energy. I would love to channel this somehow and leave other people to their own business.
Thank you for all your feedback… I will take it to heart.
I loved the insight you gave last time – this is what I can see on my chart with the Leo in it!
Saturn Capricorn 15.38 VII Leo 6.20
Uranus Leo 18.14 R VIII Libra 16.25
thank you so much
Christine:
When Mercury is conjunct your Sun – You will be able to communicate very clearly with others, and your mind will be sharp. Just be careful to take time to listen as well.
Mercury conjunct Mars: Debate! You will want to argue, probably, during this. Try to not take yourself too seriously. Pick your battles, so to speak. You will have lots of mental energy too.
However, this will occur in the 12th house and “you may be inclined to keep your opinions to yourself and not communicate them to others, even when you should. But at the same time you may be more in touch with the hidden sides of your own personality.” – Robert Hand. This is a good time to withdraw and meditate.
1st house: Now, you can express what you wanted to keep hidden during the 12th house! You mind may jump around from topic to topic during this and will be going very fast.
Mercury conjunct Mercury: this will give you some detachment in talking about even the most emotional of subjects. Can help you to be objective in areas where you may have struggled in the past.
Karen B: Mercury transiting the 11th house – it’s time to think about your goals and expectations in life. Specifically, to think about whether they are truly YOUR goals or the goals of someone else. Or, the goals you think other people want you to have.
Also, this is a time of being social! Hanging out in groups and with friends can give you perspective. But, again, your goals are your own, not theirs.

WoW! Great post! Thank you!
I have Sun and Mars in Leo in my 12th house (dreams?) and Mercury in Leo in my 1st house (self?). Hmmmm… sounds like I should batten down the hatches for a bumpy ride?
What does this mean…. Sun 7 Leo 25? And Sun in 11th house?
April, when Mercury is conjunct Mars: Debate! You will want to argue, probably, during this. Try to not take yourself too seriously. Pick your battles, so to speak. You will have lots of mental energy too.
Is Leo mostly in your 6th or 7th house? (above or below that line?)
Just saw this article today from your newsletter… sorry I’m a little late.
From my chart I see that mars is in Leo in the 6th house, right next to the thick black line that goes from AC to DC.
Kathleen, I’d say if it can’t be avoided, at least try to avoid the Mercury Retro period. (The big commitment problems in this transit with be with relationships, I suspect.) As for the 11th house, it’s time to think about your goals and expectations in life. Specifically, to think about whether they are truly YOUR goals or the goals of someone else. Or, the goals you think other people want you to have.
Also, this is a time of being social! Hanging out in groups and with friends can give you perspective. But, again, your goals are your own, not theirs.
Linda, check this our from Robert Hand, about Mercury transiting 8th, “On a mundane level, this transit can coincide with discussions and negotiations concerning finances or property, particularly those that you hold jointly with someone else…this should be a very favorable time for such negotiations.”
As for a less “mundane” level, this will be a time of deep thinking and you may experience thoughts that chance your point of view or way of thinking in general.
Hope I’m not too late. I know I’m Leo NN, no other planets there. Leo covers the last bit of 10th house and most of 11th house. It will really be hard not to make commitments until September, especially around buying a new car, but the last car was leased during a Mercury retrograde and I can tell you start to finish that entire lease was a huge problem – too long to get into here. Learned my lesson on that one!
8th House! And north node, as you know….
Great thank you! And yes, it can be tough for me to go with the flow. What a great post!
Sue, Mars in Leo, 7th house…watch out for wanting to argue a lot, just for the sake of arguing. As I said in another comment, just be careful to pick your battles, and take a breath to see if a “battle” is even necessary.
As for Mercury in the 7th in general…it will be important to go out of your way to listen to other people’s soliloquys this summer, esp in regard to relationships and yes, legal matters! It’s definitely a time of partnerships and not going it alone. This communication, when done collaboratively, will be very beneficial to everyone involved.
Mercury conjunct Pluto will have you wanting to get to the bottom of everything. You will also be more persuasive than usual. Could be a good time to write sales copy! Beware of becoming obsessed with specific ideas, though.
Valarie, are you stubborn at all?
I just ask because that is a lot of fixed energy you have (and the 8th house is ruled by fixed Scorpio)!
Mercury conjunct Sun: you will be mentally sharp and able to express yourself clearer than usual. Just make sure you take time to listen to what others are saying as well.
Mercury conjunct Mercury: this will give you some detachment in talking about even the most emotional of subjects. Can help you to be objective in areas where you may have struggled in the past.
Mercury conjunct Mars: Debate! You will want to argue, probably, during this. Try to not take yourself too seriously. Pick your battles, so to speak. You will have lots of mental energy too.
Brittany,
While Mercury is in your second house, you will think a lot about what you value in life. Pay attention to your thoughts, be mindful. You could learn something about your subconscious values.
Mercury is at home in the third house, the house that Gemini rules. Robert Hand describes this transit as, “It is as if the electricity were suddenly turned on in your mind, and you feel that you have to communicate with as many people as possible.” He cautions to use this time to gather info and gain clarity but wait until Mercury moves on to make firm conclusions. Will be a fast-paced summer for you!
Depending on exactly where your houses are divided, Mercury could move from 2 to 3, then retro back to 2 and move into 3 again.
How nice of you to give us a lil understanding of this Mars thang in our personal lives this summer. I’ve never been all that comfy with Mars in Leo in the 7th house, Pluto on the cusp between 7th and 8th
Correction: My sun, mercury, and mars are all Leonine. These are all in my 8th house. What does this mean for me?
Great post! I have leo in my 2nd and 3rd houses, with Virgo occupying the rest of the 3rd house. Thoughts?
Juliana, when there’s a “slice” on each side, the house is said to be “intercepted.” Some astrologers say that the energy of that house has trouble expressing itself when this happens. But, others say it’s not that significant.
With Mercury transiting this house, it will be important to go out of your way to listen to other people’s soliloquys this summer, esp in regard to relationships and yes, legal matters! It’s definitely a time of partnerships and not going it alone. This communication, when done collaboratively, will be very beneficial to everyone involved.
Another Awesome Astrofriday!
Your muse is on a roll
My chart always makes me scratch my head because somehow I expect the houses to be the same size, meaning one sign per house, but of course they are not. This offends my Virgo sun, Cap asc, and makes my Cancer moon anxious that I am doing it wrong.
My chart shows all of Leo (along with a slice of Cancer and a slice of Virgo) in the SEVENTH house. (Descendant?) I have MERCURY there – but it is in the little slice of Virgo rather than in Leo.
My scribbled notes on my chart say that the 7th house is: Relationships/marriage & partnership or joint ventures of any kind. It describes how you interact with people and how others tend to regard you. The seventh house is associated with legal matters, negotiations, contracts, open enemies and all open confrontations, pleasant as well as adversarial.
Hmm….. help?
Well, Sandra, it’s unlikely a school will try to pull the wool over your eyes! But, if you can avoid during Mercury Retro, that’s the safest thing!

PS: Great article! I’m hooked on your AstroFridays!
So… no commitments, starting Monday, til the end of summer? Is that right? I guess I’d better not sign on the dotted line for going back to school until the fall!
I have a Gemini rising, so that’d put Leo in my 3rd house. No planets there.
Kelly, the main thing that stands out for me, with you and your NN is that Mercury here might exacerbate any tendency to “over think,” especially when it is retrograde. Will be important, I think, for you to be out among people and not isolate yourself. And, don’t take things too seriously at this time. Be playful!
Alison,
6th house is work (not career but how you perform your work) and health. Sometimes, having Mercury transit here might make you a little anxious and nitpicky in these areas. But, you will be able to schmooze co-workers.employees like a pro at this time and persuade people to do all sorts of things! ;D
Hey Jennifer
I have Leo partially in my 7th house along with my NN and I have Leo is some of my 8th house(just alittle). Then my Sun is in my 1st house…which is opposite my NN.
I was thinking about female players simialr to George Clooney and I don’t think any public female “Maninizer” gets public attention. In my opinion since media is still run predominitly by males and males have fragile egos when it comes to their superiority complex, I doubt they would publicly admit to being played by a woman at their own game.
Awesome post!! I’m looking forward to the Leo energy
Leo in my 6th house I think.
Kim, if Leo is at your midheaven (very top of your chart, with a strong black line intersecting), that’s CAREER and how you are seen by society at large. I have that too, and given what we both do, it’s a very good thing!
I agree, with Monica! Superb!
Leo in 9th and 10th house (a tiny bit more in the 10th). No planets.
My friend is WISE indeed!
Wow. Your friend is so right. I can’t think of a famous woman who is the equivalent of Mr. Clooney either.
“Flowing like never before.” I’m holding you to it. This sounds highly promising and may turn out to be the social media/ publication/blog churning summer of my life.
Another great AstroFriday!!
