Dancing with Diana: Synching Your Life with the Moon

Waxing and waning
Bringing light into darkness
She smiles her blessing

In plain view, she readily displays her cycles of illumination and shadow, which are powerful enough to influence vast oceans. Steady, constant, incredibly beautiful, she brings light into the darkness. The moon is our icon, eternally feminine – a celestial mentor infusing us with the recognition of our own oftentimes shadowy brilliance.

Throughout the centuries, as religions espoused the idea that only the masculine was holy, the power and significance of Sister Moon was progressively downgraded. But a more balanced awareness is emerging and we are realizing that to be whole, holiness must naturally embrace all complementary aspects of being – masculine and feminine, darkness and light, body and spirit, thought and feelings.

As women, we carry the essence of femininity that is symbolized by Sister Moon within the cells of our bodies and the fabric of our souls. Intuitively we can recognize the significance of Luna, the Creator Goddess, and we can invite her to resume her rightful place as our teacher. Once revered and called by the sacred names of “Mother of the Universe,” “the Old Woman Who Never Dies,” and “The Eternal One,” the moon can bring us solace while inspiring us to learn from and respect all of our own natural cycles – the ebbs and flows, ups and downs, and the waxing and waning. – The Woman’s Book of Soul, by Sue Patton Thoele

Synching Our Lives with the Moon
I’ve designed a new course – Dancing with Diana: Synching Your Life with the Moon – to begin with the powerful Aries New Moon on March 22. While each New Moon is fruitful for strong new beginnings, the New Moon in Aries is especially powerful as Aries is the first astrological sign in the zodiac.  The sign of Aries is associated with beginnings, self-focus, authenticity, self-reliance, self-discovery, independence and courage.

Benefits
Yang
: For centuries, farmers have planted their crops by the signs and cycles of the Moon.  In this course, you will learn the best time to break a bad habit, start a new business, schedule a doctor’s appointment, ask for a raise, submit a proposal, ask someone out on a date, plant your garden, and much more!

Yin: Like the oceans, our bodies are already synched with the Moon. This course will bring mindful awareness to the ways in which our mind, emotions, body and intuition are responding to the Moon’s cycles.  Our individual responses to these cycles are largely unique. This is not something we can read about in a book. We must tune in to our personal reactions.

Mindfulness is based on Buddhist teachings and refers to bringing one’s complete attention to the present experience on a moment-to-moment basis. It is a present-centered awareness in which each thought, feeling, or sensation that arises in the attentional field is acknowledged and accepted as it is. Current scientific research suggests that sustained mindfulness practices are useful in the treatment of stress and anxiety. (Source: Mindfulness (Psychology)

Mindfulness is not only moment to moment awareness of present events, but also, remembering to be aware of something or to do something at a designated time in the future. When practicing mindfulness, for instance, by watching the breath, one must remember to maintain attention on the breath, faithfully returning back to refocus on the breath whenever the mind wanders away from it. (Source: Mindfulness)

In this course, we will use the changing of the Moon from one astrological sign to the next, to bring our awareness to our present experiences, and learn how the Moon influences us. By the end of the course, we should be able to notice patterns – Are you always happy when the Moon is in Taurus? Angry in Scorpio? Do you have intuitive insights when the Moon is in Sagittarius? Are you weepy in water signs? Following the teaching of mindfulness, we will not analyze our thoughts and feelings but simply bring awareness to them.

As physician and mindfulness expert, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, once wrote, “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf.” This class will teach us to surf, to dance with, the Moon’s energy.

How it works
I will mostly use emails, sending class participants an email each time the Moon changes signs. You may be asleep when this email goes out, and that’s ok. But when you see the email, your attention will be brought back to your thoughts and feelings and physical sensations. At the beginning of the course, I will send worksheets that you can use to record your mindful observations. You do not have to use these worksheets – it is completely up to you. But, they will be designed to help you more easily look for patterns when the course ends. Also, they will provide a great reference for the Yang portion of the course!

On the New and Full Moons, I will provide additional meditations or activities corresponding to the astrological sign.

The moon changes signs frequently –three times a week. One email a week will provide information on that Moon sign’s Yang activities, e.g. this is a good time to get your hair cut, plant tomatoes, stop eating sugar, ask for a raise. The remaining two emails will be short, simple reminders to be mindful.

You will learn the Yang information on one new astrological sign each week. This way you will be allowed to learn gradually (which increases your ability to retain the knowledge). Since there are 12 astrological signs, the course will last for 12 weeks.

The moon goes through each astrological sign once per month. Therefore, over this twelve week period, you will be able to mindfully observe yourself with each Zodiac sign, a total of three times. This allows you to notice patterns and also, gives you the knowledge and discipline to continue the mindfulness practice on your own.

After a while, you may be able to intuitively know which sign the moon is in because you will recognize your body’s reaction to it. Then, you truly will be Shimmying with Sefkhet! (Sefkhet is the Egyptian Goddess of the Moon.)
