Does wishing on the New Moon REALLY work?

Does it really work? Yes, I’m a skeptical astrologer. I see chart readings resonate with people again and again, so I have faith in them. But, wishing on the New Moon? An astrologer friend of mine described it once as “silly.” (But she still does it!)

I bought Jan Spiller’s book, New Moon Astrology: The Secret of Astrological Timing to Make All Your Dreams Come True, last spring and have been making the new moon wishes for a year now.  I faithfully write down my wishes each month, and wrote down even more during my “power period” – last September –  when the sun was transiting my eleventh house. As Jan Spiller writes, “Depending on your individual astrology chart, some days will be extremely potent for you personally, and others will operate to a lesser extent. This is because your specific astrology chart isn’t mathematically duplicated for over twenty-five thousand years, due to the planets traveling at different speeds around the Sun. Sometimes, due to the changing planetary alignments, the monthly Moon cycle will more vigorously trigger your individual wiring than at other times. Therefore, it is critical to use every New Moon, so as not to miss those that are the most powerful for you.”

I have a blank journal, with a photo of a male and female cardinal, which I’ve been using for “free writing” for a few years now. I bought it after my unusual experience with seeing lots of cardinals fly around me, the morning after making a request about meeting my Spirit Guides. I now use this journal for my New Moon wishes, and I just reviewed my entries.

The New Moon in Leo occurred at 11:10pm on the August 9th. I’m usually sound asleep by 10pm, and you’re not supposed to write these wishes before the New Moon. So, I wrote mine when I got up. According to the journal, it was 5:50am on August 10th. Leo rules love and romance, creativity, play and fun. The first two wishes I made were about being in a relationship. (I can’t believe I’ve been single now for over 3 years!) As I wrote down the first wish, I heard, “whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will.” That was odd. I don’t recall hearing a whippoorwill where I live before. As I started to write the second wish, again about relationships, I heard, “whip-poor-will, whip-poor-will.” Didn’t hear the bird’s call for any of the remaining wishes. And, I haven’t heard one since then, either! (Weird looking creatures, aren’t they?!)

Whenever an odd animal event occurs, I always head for my copy of Animal Speak, The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small, by Ted Andrews. But, he doesn’t have an entry on the whip-poor-will; it’s only mentioned as a footnote. Instead, I read about the bird in various online encyclopedias. It’s referred to as a “night jar” because its call “jars” people in the middle of the night. A surprise. From this, I got that my wish will come true suddenly, and seemingly “out of nowhere.”

A few weeks prior to this, I’d had a Reiki session. My practitioner likes to have her clients pull a divination card, or a rune, at the end of each session. At the end of that session, she asked me to pick a rune.  I pulled, “Uruz”, which can mean “sudden, dramatic change.” Interestingly, it “also indicates the positive aspects of Mars-energy, willpower and determination.” (Remember that Mars rules Aries? And remember all the planets in Aries right now – including Uranus, the planet that rules my sun sign, Aquarius? Plus, in my birthchart, I have Mars in Aries.)

A few weeks after this “whip-poor-will” incident, I had a reading with Sherrie Dillard. One of the things she said was, “You’re quite lucky. Things just happen for you.” The first response I had was, “I’ve got Jupiter conjunct ascendant!” Yes, my brain relates everything to astrology. But, that is supposedly a very “lucky” placement. The issue with things, “just happening,” however, is that I DON’T KNOW WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO HAPPEN. My life doesn’t tend to be the result of plans that culminate in an expected positive result. No. Things just happen, but sometimes, there are YEARS in between the “happenings.” Sure, things are happening during these years but I don’t recognize, until much later, how they are related to my wishes.

For instance, it took me three years to get pregnant. I tried the “planning” bit. I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility from cover to cover. I owned a basal body thermometer. I have charts and charts and charts of my temps and ovulations dates. I went through a body of fertility tests when I couldn’t conceive. Everything was fine. And, suddenly, out of nowhere, I was pregnant. Three years after deciding to try.

I’ve frequently talked about North Nodes and how they are the most important part of a person’s chart. My North Node is in Pisces.  In another book, Astrology for the Soul, Jan Spiller writes this about the Pisces North Node, “Theirs is the easiest of all incarnations, if they will only let go of their attachment of making it difficult. If they ‘Let go and let God,’ they can move in the peacefulness of the Infinite itself guiding them.”

This doesn’t mean my wishes won’t come true; it just means that I can control the way, or the time, of their manifestation. To help myself out with this frustration of waiting and not knowing, every New Moon I make wishes about surrendering to the plan the Universe has for me. (As for timing, though, I’m pinning my hopes on all this Aries action!)

When making your own wishes, I recommend you work with your own North Node. You can check your North Node, and get a general feel of it, by reading this post I wrote about New Year’s Resolutions. Also, if you want to write your Node in the comment field below, I’ll provide a suggested wish for you to include on the next New Moon (May 3!). Working with astrology, you can understand how your life works in a profound way.

And, I promise to let you know when the “suddenly unexpected” occurs!

  2. WOODHAVEN:

    North Node: Scorpio

  3. These new moon wishes really work. There was something that happened to me around one of my wishes, it was indirect but right along with my wish.

  4. admin:

Laurie, I don’t even have to look it up. You’re a Pisces North Node like me! Thanks for reading!

  5. Laurie:

I just read your article on New Moon wishes and would like to know where my “Node” is. My birthday is May 21, 1970. I am hoping you can help me with this, I would really appreciate your insight and advice. Thank you and have a great day.

  6. Since receiving your insightful reading, I’ve been working hard to release my work to the flow of the Universe on a regular basis. The quote “…can move in the peacefulness of the Infinite itself guiding them.” really resonated with me Jennifer. Since we’re the same north node, I’m also working on letting go of the control so I can immerse in the flow.

Scorpio: I want all self-defeating stubbornness totally lifted from me.

  8. Kim J:

Thanks, Jen. What about Scorpio–asking for a friend of mine.

  9. admin:

Aries: I want to easily find myself feeling complete and confident in just being myself.

Glad it’s working for you Kim! I should do periodic “check-ins” to see how people’s wishes are manifesting!

  10. Kim J:

Hi, Jen. My North node is in Aries. I made a vision board last week for the new moon, and wishes, and I think it is already working… THANK YOU!

  11. admin:

Gemini: “I want to easily find myself successfully applying clear logic in every area of my life.”

Holly, that’s great your vision board is working so quickly!

  12. admin:

Tiffany, I know a lot of people who have their sun in their South Node. It’s not uncommon. It generally require balance of some sort. The rest of your chart would show that. A first house North Node gives you shades of Aries as well. A good wish for you, “I want to easily find myself successfully taking charge in every area of my life.”

  13. Holly St. Pierre:

    Hi Jen!
I love the idea of wishing on the new moon. I just made a new vision board during the new moon in Aries and it’s already having and effect!
    My north node is Gemini.

  14. TIffany:

Capricorn 1st house, south node with the sun, venus mercury?…maybe mercury? Sun with my s. node, ive heard is not so good.

  15. tiffany:

North node capricorn (1st house)…but…my south node is in cancer, with the sun and venus?!?…eeek?

  16. admin:

Libra North Nodes: “I want preoccupation with my own survival totally lifted from me.”

  17. Julie:

Okay. Trying again. Libra. : )

  18. @ Megz <3

  19. Yes! Opposite but complementary to my both best friends on Net!! XOXO

  20. Thank you!
;-) I got pregnant both times the first month we decided to… I found my soul mate and husband a few months after I had finished with a painful (then, now deeply grateful for) relationship that made me realize what I want…
I have periods that I wait and wait for sth to happen, but generally speaking, and perhaps due to my involvement with spirituality (reiki, angels…) I have surrendered all outcome to the timing of the Universe, so as you said, I don’t feel the strugle.

  21. admin:

Christiana, we’re fellow Pisces North Nodes! So, what applies to me will apply to you (well, very generally, the house placement of your North node is also very important)

  22. Pisces! (Megz, we’re opposite on this, however complementary… I guess)

  23. admin:

Leo: “I want to easily find myself using the power of my will to create the results I want.” OR “I want to easily find myself actively creating my own happy destiny.”

  24. admin:

Virgo is going to be the opposite of mine! Try either, “When worries arise, I want to easily find myself responding by focusing on a practical plan to restore order” OR “I want to easily find myself clearly defining my goals and objectives.”

  25. Lori Paquette:

    Leo

  26. Virgo ;)
