I’m trying out a new feature on FemCentral – Astro Fridays. Often, I find that astrology can shed light on the theme of the week, and the great thing about astrology is that it’s personalized! So, this is a way to make the topic a little more practical and personal to you, the reader. There will likely be some weeks when I can’t make a good fit between the topic and astrology. If that’s the case, I’ll provide another resource instead. But, if the planets can guide us, you’ll find their help here on Fridays!
To find a good description of your comfort zone, you should look for your North and South Nodes. The astrologer, Bob Mark, has a very applicable description of the Nodes:
The Moon’s nodes are not planets. In fact, they are not even material objects! Just two points in space where the Moon’s orbit crosses the plane of the Earth’s orbit. The North Node simply shows the general area that you have to develop. The opposite point, the South Node, shows the place where you feel comfortable. Too comfortable. If you stay there, you get into a rut. And worse. Your life can stagnate.
Picture the South Node as your roots and the North Node as your leaves and branches. You have to grow in the direction of the leaves. If you spend too much time on your South Node roots, you get root rot. Ironically, it is only when we concentrate on our North Node sign that we get what we want from our South Node placement.
I’ve sketched out the comfort zone and suggested action steps for each of the Nodes below. Unless you’ve had an astrological reading, you probably don’t know your Nodes. I’ve included a North Node chart for people born between 1940 and mid-1986. If your birthday doesn’t show up on this chart, check out the longer chart at CafeAstrology.com.

North Node Taurus (South Node Scorpio)
- Comfort zone: You might like drama. You also have a tendency to depend on the resources of others.
- Step out of your comfort zone by building up your own resources, your own personal stability. Start a savings account, build something on your own (a business, a product, or something more literal)
North Node Gemini (South Node Sagittarius)
- Comfort zone: Trusting your gut without consulting other people or the facts. Prejudging situations.
- Step out of your comfort zone by trying to see both sides of every situation. Go out of your way to ask what other people think and keep an open mind.
North Node Cancer (South Node Capricorn)
- Comfort zone: Being very goal oriented and suppressing feelings
- Step out of your comfort zone by noticing and validating your own feelings (and those of others) and staying focused on the process (instead of the goal)
North Node Leo (South Node Aquarius)
- Comfort zone: Blending in with your friends; being one of the crowd
- Step out of your comfort zone by stepping into the limelight on occasion. Do it playfully and creatively.
North Node Virgo (South Node Pisces)
- Comfort zone: Withdrawing/escaping from life when things are confusing or upsetting
- Step out of your comfort zone by actively participating in life, by taking risks in spite of your fears. Create a routine and stick with it.
North Node Libra (South Node Aries)
- Comfort zone: Extreme self-reliance
- Step out of your comfort zone by working with other people, on teams, instead of always doing it alone.
North Node Scorpio (South Node Taurus)
- Comfort zone: Doing things the way “they’ve always been done”; attachment to money and possessions
- Step out of your comfort zone by embracing constructive change, eliminating non-useful possessions and learning to enjoy things without owning them.
North Node Sagittarius (South Node Gemini)
- Comfort zone: Trusting other people’s judgment over your own; always seeking more information before acting
- Step out of your comfort zone by developing, listening to and following your intuition.
North Node Capricorn (South Node Cancer)
- Comfort zone: You really enjoy being taken care of and nurturing and caring for others. You might often look for mother and/or father figures in relationships.
- Step out of your comfort zone by taking charge of your life. Concrete goals are especially important for Capricorn North Nodes.
North Node Aquarius (South Node Leo)
- Comfort zone: Doing what’s expected (instead of following your heart) and looking for the approval of others.
- Step out of your comfort zone by being part of a group and joining a humanitarian cause.
North Node Pisces (South Node Virgo)
- Comfort zone: Staying busy and organized. Overanalyzing everything (including people!)
- Step out of your comfort zone by doing nothing for a while. Trust that a Higher Power is taking care of what you need.
There’s much, much more to each of the North Nodes. If you’d like to learn more about yours, check out this page.
